Laura Gilbert, flute
Laura Gilbert has appeared around the world as chamber musician, soloist, recitalist and guest lecturer. In 2012 she co-founded Electric Earth Concerts, a year-round music festival based in Peterborough, New Hampshire. During her current tenure as co-artistic director of Electric Earth and her previous co-directorship of Monadnock Music (2006-2011), she has created award-winning programming and has won major foundation support from the NEA, Argosy, Getty, Goelet, and many other organizations. In addition to holding the principal flute positions of Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic and City Music- Cleveland Chamber Orchestra, Ms. Gilbert is a founding member, performing and recording with Auréole, a flute, viola and harp trio that has commissioned over 50 new works.
Among her many appearances, Ms. Gilbert has performed with Musicians from Marlboro, Brandenburg Ensemble, the Borromeo, Brentano, Saint Lawrence, and Ciompi String Quartets, Chamber Music at the 92nd Street “Y”, Saint Luke’s Ensemble and Orchestra, The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, The New York Philharmonic and Speculum Musicae. Ms. Gilbert also performs frequently in the Gilbert-Goni Duo, with guitarist, Antigoni Goni. As advocates of folk-inspired classical music, the Duo has commissioned numerous new works, many of which are included on their album “From the New Village,” on Koch International Classics. Ms. Gilbert’s extensive discography includes a Grammy award for Dawn Upshaw’s “Girl with the Orange Lips”, numerous solo recordings on Koch International, and 13 discs with Auréole, a number of which have been short-listed for Grammy awards.
Ms. Gilbert has been a grant review panelist for The National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, Meet the Composer and the National Flute Association. She has served on the faculties of Peabody Conservatory, Harid Conservatory, Purchase College, The Aaron Copland School at Queens College, and Bowdoin Summer Music Festival, and is currently on the faculties of Mannes College of Music and Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn. Ms. Gilbert holds a DMA from SUNY, Stony Brook, a Diploma and Master of Music from the Juilliard School, and Bachelor degrees from Sarah Lawrence College and New England Conservatory of Music. Her teachers, to whom she remains eternally grateful, are Samuel Baron, Julius Baker, Thomas Nyfenger, and Keith Underwood.
